Error Code P0322 is defined as Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Low. This code applies to all spark ignition engines, such as Audi, Mercedes Benz, Mazda and Volkswagen vehicles.

This code is a generic trouble code, meaning it applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II, especially those made since 1996 up to present. Specifications on the definition, troubleshooting and repairs, vary from one vehicle make to another.

Definition

The Distributor/Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) measures the exact position and rotational speed of the crankshaft for the PCM (powertrain control module, also known as ECM or engine control module in other vehicles makes) to use for the engine rpm and to control both fuel delivery and ignition timing.

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the other hand, provides the PCM with the exact location of the camshaft, as well as its timing and distributor timing. When the voltage below the set level, in either of the two circuits, the PCM will automatically trigger the Error Code P0322, indicating an interrupted and/or unreliable signal in Distributor/Crankshaft Position Sensor signal.

Common Symptoms

As with other trouble codes, this error code triggers the Check Engine light. Other common symptoms include:

  • Engine misfire
  • Engine stumble
  • Lack of power in the engine
  • Engine hesitation
  • Engine cranks, but will not start

Possible Causes

  • Open in control circuit (ground circuit) between the distributor/ignition/engine speed sensor and PCM
  • Open in the power supply circuit between distributor/ignition/engine speed sensor and PCM
  • Short to ground in power supply circuit to the ignition distributor/ignition/engine speed sensor
  • Faulty ignition, distributor or engine speed sensor

Other possible causes of this error code are:

  • Defective crankshaft position sensor(s)
  • Defective camshaft position sensor(s)
  • Corroded or faulty crankshaft position sensor(s) connections or wirings
  • Misfiring engine
  • Rough running
  • Failed PCM (in rare cases)

How to Check

Troubleshooting of this error code may vary on the make of the vehicle, ignition type/engine speed sensor/distributor and colors of the wire to the sensor.

As with other error codes, diagnosis for P0322 requires the use of OBD-II scanner to identify what is causing the code. Then, the mechanic will conduct a visual inspection of the affected system(s), and search for corroded or faulty connectors or wirings.

If the wirings and connectors are all intact and in good shape, the mechanic will proceed to test, and may be replace the defective crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor and/or distributor position sensor.

Repairs for this error code are pretty easy and straightforward once the cause of the problem has been determined. This is why it is important to have a thorough diagnosis. Some of the most common fixes are:

  • Repair or replacement of corroded or damaged connectors or wirings in the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and/or distributor position sensor
  • Repair or replacement of the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and/or distributor position sensor
  • Replacing battery or getting a fully charged battery
  • Replace PCM (rare)

The cause of the misfire must be diagnosed before proceeding to repair Error Code P0322. This is to save you from unnecessary expenses in replacing sensors or other repairs that are not causing the problem, and will not solve the cause of misfire problems.
