Error Code P0951: Auto Shift Manual Control Circuit Range/Performance
Error Code P0951 is defined as Auto Shift Manual Control Circuit Range/Performance. This is a generic trouble code, meaning it applies to all vehicles equipped with the OBD-II system, especially those made since 1996 up to the present. Of course, specifications on the definition, troubleshooting, and repairs vary from one make and model to another.
This code applies to vehicles with an automatic transmission with a manual shifting feature, which allows the driver to control the gears changes manually by placing the shift levers into a special gate next to the PRNDL labels. Transmission parts of this type of vehicle include an actuator, switch on the gear selector, and a lot of wirings. Error Code P0951 appears when a component within this system is not working according to their set parameters.
Common Symptoms
- Check engine light illumination
- Disabled manual shifting function
Possible Causes
- Faulty connectors or wirings
- Defective transmission shift switch
How to Check
This code is often caused by faulty wiring. Thus you can start the diagnosis by inspecting the connectors and wires. Look for any signs of corroded connectors or damages and wear and tear in the wires. These usually happen due to liquid being spilled into the transmission shifter.
Make sure to check all connectors around the shift mechanism as well. Also, inspect the transmission shift switch for corrosion and damage.
If there are no broken connectors or frayed wires, then proceed on checking the transmission manual shift switch/up and down switch and look for signs of water damage.
How to Fix
- Repair or replacement of damaged or corroded connectors or wirings
- Replacement of transmission shift switch
This code will not significantly affect the drivability of the vehicle or cause serious internal damages. However, you will not be able to use the manual shift feature of the vehicle.
