Error Code P061B: Internal Control Module Torque Calculation Performance
Table of Contents
Error Code P061B is defined as Internal Control Module Torque Calculation Performance.
This error code is a manufacturer-specific trouble code, meaning it does not apply to all vehicles makes. Rather, it applies only to specific vehicle makes, such as Ford. Specification on the definition, troubleshooting, and repairs still vary from one make and model to another.
Definition
The PCM (powertrain control module, also known as ECM or engine control module) compares the actual torque signal computed from the air flow sensor signal with the torque signal demanded by the driver, which is computed from the accelerator pedal position sensor signal. If the PCM determines the computed values are out of factory specifications for the vehicle, then it will set the Error Code P061B, indicating a fault in the internal control module torque calculation performance.
Common Symptoms
As with other error codes, this code activates the Check Engine light and registers the code to the vehicle’s memory system.
Possible Causes
There are many possible causes for this code, such as:
- Defective throttle valve control servo
- Open or shorted harness in throttle valve control servo
- Poor electrical circuit in throttle valve control servo
- Defective MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor
- Foreign matter inside airflow sensor
- Software incapability problem
- Defective PCM (rare)
How to Check
Technicians check the air cleaner to the engine thoroughly and make sure the cleaner cover is on properly.
When checking the air filter, technicians don’t just make sure the filter is clean or not, they also make sure it’s sitting properly flat on its place. There should be no tearing on the foam or in the pleats, or neoprene type seal. Cheap air filters will collapse easily, which can also cause this code, as unfiltered air can get past it, messing up the MAF sensor.
Bad air filter also causes a vortex to the air inside the filter, causing erratic readings in the MAF sensor, causing the throttle body to shut down.
How to Fix
Error Code P061B is an air filter or intake snorkel issue. Thus, replacing the air filter can usually solve the trouble code. Of course, it is important to get the right quality and size for the filter.
Also, shorted harness and poor electrical circuit in the throttle valve servo must be repaired.
A collapsed air filter doesn’t just bring in dirt, but also things like snow, which can shock the hot wire inside and mess with the MAF sensor, causing the engine to shut down as well.
