Error Code P2716 is defined as Pressure Control Solenoid ‘D’ Electrical Shift Solenoid Valve SLT. This suggests an anomaly in specific electronic pressure control solenoid or solenoid circuit.
This error code is a manufacturer-specific trouble code, meaning it does not apply to all vehicles makes. Rather, it applies only to specific vehicle makes, such as Toyota. Specification of the definition, troubleshooting, and repairs still vary from one make and model to another.
Definition
The Linear Solenoid Valve (also called SLT) works by controlling the transmission line pressure for smooth transmission operation, based on signals from the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the vehicle’s speed sensor. The PCM (powertrain control module, also known as ECM or engine control module in other vehicle makes) controls and adjusts the duty ratio of the SLT solenoid valve to control the hydraulic line pressure that comes from the primary regulator valve. Appropriate line pressure makes sure that there is smooth shifting with varying engine outputs.
Error Code P2716 happens when the PCM has determined an error in a specific electronic pressure control solenoid or solenoid circuit. Although the setting parameters for this code vary from one manufacturer (or even model) to another, every application uses calculations based on the throttle position, engine speed, engine load, and vehicle speed to determine the desired pump degree pressure required for efficient operation. If the desired fluid pressure failed to coincide with the actual amount detected, then the Error Code P271 will come up and simultaneously activate the indicator lamp.
In some cases, the vehicle may have to fail multiple cycles for the Check Engine light to light up.
Common Symptoms
Depending on the cause and nature of the problem, there can be multiple symptoms of this error code. This code may also be accompanied by Limp mode, which a safety mechanism for vehicles designed to protect the engine from further damage. This mode will cause the engine to only run at very low RPMs or barely move. Some of the common symptoms are:
- Disabled shifting function
- Failure to engage/disengage of torque converter
- Harsh shifting
- Transmission slippage
- Transmission overheating
- Decreased fuel efficiency
Other symptoms include issues in the torque converter clutch, lockup, gear ratio, shift solenoid, and transmission slippage codes.
Possible Causes
Possible causes for this code include:
- Damaged shift solenoid connector (broken or damaged pins, moisture)
- Open or shorted to ground shift solenoid connector
- Electrical fault in shift solenoid connector
- Defective PCM
How to Check
Check solenoid resistance at the transmission connector (Pin One Red/White wire, pin Four- Pink wire) resistance specification 5.0 to 5.6 ohms at 70°F.
If the solenoids are in good shape, then check the wire harness and the connections at the back of the PCM. The solenoid is located just behind the transmission oil pan; you can also check the resistance to make sure it’s not what’s causing the problem before you replace it.
How to Fix
The most common fix for this code is to simply replace the solenoid.
Next, you have to check and test the wirings, look for signs of damage, chafed wires, broken, corroded connections, etc. Repair as necessary.
If the problem is still not there, then it may be a case of failed PCM, in which case you have to replace and update the PCM.
It may be rare for the PCM to fail, but it’s very possible. PCM usually comes with 8 years warranty or 80,000 miles. If the vehicle doesn’t have a salvaged title, your dealer can install a new one for free.
